Software Craftsmanship in the Age of AI: Why It Matters More

A carpenter with a power saw cuts faster than one with a hand saw. Nobody thinks the power saw made carpentry obsolete. It made a bad cut faster, too. AI is the power saw of software.

Quick answer: Software craftsmanship is the practice of building software with care: understanding the problem, writing clear and tested code, and leaving systems others can maintain. In the age of AI it matters more, because AI multiplies the speed of both good and bad decisions, and only human judgement decides which ones get shipped.

What is software craftsmanship?

The idea grew out of the software craftsmanship movement of the late 2000s, which argued that working software is not enough; it should also be well-crafted, and the people building it should keep improving their skills. At its heart it is a professional attitude: you are responsible for the quality of what you ship, not only for shipping it.

Why does craftsmanship matter more with AI?

  • More code, faster. When code is cheap to produce, the scarce skill is deciding which code should exist.
  • Plausible mistakes. AI output usually looks correct. Spotting the subtle error takes experience.
  • Maintenance still costs money. Every line you ship is a line someone must understand later.
  • Trust. Clients need someone accountable. An AI tool cannot sign off on a release.

Five habits of a software craftsman

  1. Understand before building. Talk to the users; read the data; write down what “done” means.
  2. Small steps. Ship in small, reviewable changes so mistakes are cheap.
  3. Test what matters. Automated tests around the parts that would hurt most if they broke.
  4. Read every line you ship. Including, especially, the lines an AI wrote.
  5. Leave it better. Clear names, short docs, no mystery. The next engineer is a customer too.

Does this slow things down?

Briefly, yes; overall, no. The time spent understanding and testing is small compared with the time lost rebuilding the wrong feature or fixing production bugs. Combined with AI tools, a craftsman is both fast and careful, which is the point of being AI-first.

Why “Home of Software Craftsmen”?

It is our promise to clients: the engineers we deploy will use every modern tool, and still treat your system as if they had to maintain it themselves for years. That is what makes a Forward Deployed Engineer worth trusting inside your business.

Frequently asked questions

Is software craftsmanship just about clean code?

Clean code is part of it, but the bigger part is responsibility: understanding the problem, communicating trade-offs honestly and owning the quality of the result.

Will AI replace software craftsmen?

AI is replacing a lot of typing, not the judgement about what to build, how to test it and when it is safe to ship. Those skills become more valuable as code gets cheaper.

How can I tell if a team practices craftsmanship?

Ask to see their tests, their code reviews and a handover document from a past project. Craft shows up in the boring details.
